Where are the voices that I heard in the street?
Its been almost a month since the protests against the education budget cut, rather, the state university budget. Needless to say, all the hype has died down. People marched and fought for what they believed to be a good cause, but where are they now? As with everything today that I’ve noticed, it was just a trend. And its so sad that it is.
The march, the rallies. I believed in them because they showed our solidarity in fighting for the cause. Solidarity displays the worth of that cause. Apparently, it didn’t truly exist in this case.
Where are those people who said “quality education is a right, not a privilege”? Where are those people who marched outside our rooms and presented themselves to the media and their friends? Have they died or blended into the crowd of mediocrity?
We are the students of the University of the Philippines. We are fortunate to be in our place. Have we stopped fighting for the same opportunity to be allowed to our less privileged countrymen? Have we stopped believing in long-term progress, or have we just gone back to our old mediocre ways of procrastination?
